Modbus is a communication protocol commonly used by meters, controllers, drives, power equipment, mechanical systems, and gateways. Deployments typically use serial Modbus RTU or Ethernet-based Modbus TCP.

Modbus exchanges values through coils and registers, so successful integration depends on accurate register maps, data types, scaling, byte order, addressing, timing, and control permissions. A protocol gateway may translate selected data into another building system.
